This industrial electronics company has served the world for devices in 3D measurement, imaging, and realization solutions. Using this type of technology helps those in those varying industries use real-time data to make informed decisions quicker. Industries like law enforcement, aerospace, and industrial plants commonly use these products. The company, in this case, had a unique challenge on their hands that called for over 50 molds for separate parts for a 3D measuring device. Moreover, they also needed these parts done quickly and without error to lower the chance of supply chain problems.

Our Objective

This company approached Seaway Plastics to aid in completing this task. They and SPE worked to get the plans completed and encouraged both companies’ staff to collaborate. With this project, time was of the essence with little room for error. However, with the two companies interfacing their skills and expertise, this company received the support they needed to start.

The Results

The company then received product samples within 3 weeks after SPE’s in-house tooling experts completed the molds. Normal turnaround for the parts like what they requested averages between 6 to 10 weeks. Also, Seaway completed their project before their anticipated deadline with project completion in 10 weeks after the initial project start. For a project that involved 58 different molds made and on spec would average 6 months for other manufacturers.

With this quick turnaround for parts, it can leave many to wonder about the quality. Out of over 10,000 parts made for this project in 2020, the company returned 1% of the product back to Seaway. The industry average return rate for plastic injection manufacturing for 2020 was 5.11%.

Conclusion

In conclusion, through steady collaboration, this company managed to receive their parts before the deadline with a 50% decrease in time between project kickoff and sampling product. After completion and shipping, they experienced a much lower than average return rate (82.2% decrease from the average) for parts despite the small time frame they had to ensure the products’ integrity.
